FrontPage users who are interested in bringing their Websites to higher levels of sophistication and standards compliancy will find Expression Web and Coffee Cup to be invaluable tools for developing Websites during this transition period.
How do I publish my Website in Coffee Cup?
- To create or publish your site, you can use any editor. However, Coffee Cup is a great choice because it has a separate editor for the forms and resembles FrontPage. If you want to use Coffee Cup HTML editor, it looks very similar to FrontPage as you see below.
- Get a local copy. You can do this very easily in the Coffee Cup HTML editor. Simply, go to: file--open from web. Click on it you will see a box below:
- Enter in your site name and where you wish to save it. Once you do this, you can now publish your site to the new server. Again, you can use the standard ftp client since Extensions will not be a factor on the new server.
- To edit the server , go to File > upload file to server > add or edit server.
- Click on ADD. You will see the box below:
- Add the httpdocs to remote folders.
- Check the Use Passive Mode box.
- Enter your username, password and website.
- Once you do this, your site is ready. Now, choose the upload file to server then your server name and the httpdocs directory. After this is finished, you're now done uploading your site.
For more details, check out the Coffee Cup Web tutorial that gives more details on their HTML editor.
How do I publish my Website in Expression Web?
- Open the website on your computer in Expression Web. Make sure you have saved all of your pages. You will receive a warning if you have not once you start the publishing process.
- If you didn't set the options for your site before developing your site, check your settings before attempting to upload/publish.
- From the Recalculate Hyperlinks Site, click Recalculate Hyperlinks.
- Choose File, and then click Publish Site.
- If the remote website dialogue box does not pop up, click the remote website button in the upper right hand side of the window.
- Choose the "Remote Website" tab.
- Under Remote Web server type, select FrontPage Server Extensions, WebDav, FTP, or File System.
- "Remote Website Location" - type the Internet address, including the protocol, of the remote website that you want to publish folders and files to -- for example,
ftp://www.your-domain.comORhttp://www.your-domain.com - " FTP Directory" is the folder/directory on the server you are publishing the files to.
- Then click on the "Publishing" tab and make the following changes:
- When you click "OK", you will get a window to enter your username and password. Be sure to type them EXACTLY as they were given to you - passwords are case sensitive.
- You will see your website (on your computer) in the left window.
- Depending on what you are trying to do: There are three arrows between the windows. If you want to move just a file or two, you can highlight it, then click the arrow to copy just that file or files.
- "Local to Remote" is used most often. It publishes everything that has changed from your computer to your server.
- "Remote to Local" is used if you happen to lose your site on your computer or damage the files, you could use this to download the site or a file from server to your own computer.
- "Synchronize" - compares the two sites and moves the data back and forth until they match. Use this with caution.
- If you use the "Publish website" button, when complete you will get a message that your file is finished uploading.
- The next time you publish your site, this process will compare the server site with what is on your computer. If there are files on the remote server that you've deleted from the web on your computer, a message box may pop up asking you if you want to delete them. If you are sure they are no longer needed, answer OK. If not, do some checking.
